OBJECTIVE

Total Return = Capital Appreciation Plus Income

STRATEGY

Growth at reasonable prices
SMC Capital Management, Inc. seeks to achieve positive, competitive returns while minimizing risks for our equity investors by employing a RELATIVE VALUE approach to identify sectors, industries and companies that offer growth opportunities at reasonable prices. Companies that meet our specific requirements for financial strength, earnings, cash flow expectations, market liquidity, deemed to be low-cost producers, provide proprietary products or services as well as being industry leaders are considered for client portfolios. The top one-third of the companies that are included in the Standard & Poor's 500 Stock Index make up the universe of companies considered for investment.

Fundamental Investment Analysis
State of the art electronic resources and proprietary screening techniques are used to analyze industry and company financial data to identify companies that exhibit the three key elements of value:

  • positive revenue growth.
  • positive earnings growth
  • an attractive relative price/earnings ratio

These factors coupled with frequent, direct contact of company management ensures that all securities purchased are thoroughly analyzed.

Sell Discipline
A target price is established and updated on a regular basis relative to overall market fundamentals. An equity is sold or reduced when its target price is reached and, also if the fundamental reasons for purchase have changed or when a stock price declines twenty percent relative to the market unless an unusual period of market volatility exists.

BALANCED PORTFOLIO

OBJECTIVE

Income and Growth

STRATEGY

For Clients who seek a balance in their portfolio, we suggest a ratio of common stocks and fixed-income investments that meet the client's particular needs. We take into account the amount of risk, defined as price volatility, that a client feels comfortable with. Typically a ratio would be set at 60 percent common stocks and 40 percent bonds, notes and preferred stocks. The ratio will vary from client to client according to income requirements, growth expectations, and long-term goals. With the current extremely low level of interest rates, we would be inclined to be at the lower end of the range in fixed-income investments.

FIXED INCOME PORTFOLIO

OBJECTIVE

Income and Moderate Appreciation

STRATEGY

Achievement of a positive, competitive total return while minimizing interest rate risk encompasses our fixed income philosophy. Preservation of capital is a fundamental priority and our fixed income strategy emphasizes U.S. Treasury and Federal Agency obligations and corporate obligations rated at least A- or better by Standard & Poor's and Moody's rating services. Short-term money market instruments such as commercial paper and money market funds are also utilized to help achieve the desired maturity, duration, and liquidity requirements.

Interest Rate Trend Analysis
Domestic and international economic and inflationary trends, Federal Reserve monetary policy and prevailing political factors are analyzed to determine their probable impact upon interest rates and bond prices, If interest rates and bond prices. If interest rates are forecasted to decline, action to extend the maturity and duration of the portfolio is in order to secure higher yields and capture the rise in bond prices. When interest rates are expected to rise, shortening of the portfolio's average maturity and duration consistent with our commitment of capital preservation is warranted.
